The San Francisco Bay area is a relatively new American viticultural area in California; it was designated in 1999, at the request of Wente, an influential local winery.
Though the wines produced there are nowhere near as famous as Napa Valley or Sonoma wines, there is a large number of interesting local wineries, many of them featuring a San Francisco wine club.
It is easy to be overlooked when you grow by the side of giants!
In a way, San Francisco both benefits and suffers from the proximity of giants like Napa, with its over 700 working wineries. However, you shouldn't underestimate this vast - 1.5 million acres - region's yields.
You will most likely appreciate its popular Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons.
Chic Wine Clubs and Traditional Wineries
The 25 year-old
Wine Club Santa Ana
also has a store front in the city of San Francisco, similarly called The Wine Club San Francisco. Both a great store and a convenient wine club, The Wine Club San Francisco is a great place for both finding your favorite wines, finding great prices, and discovering exotic wines through the club's periodical selections.
Located in the neighborhood which acquired world-fame through Sean Penn's popular biopic MILK, Swirl on Castro is a classy wine club and wine store offering 2 bottles of carefully selected wines for under $45 every month. The club also features an artsy store space with books, art installations, and a selection of wine accessories. Nice combination! :-)
The oldest continuously family-owned winery in the country, Wente Vineyards has been producing some of the best local wines for over 125 years. With a fantastic setting and stylish architecture, Wente offers a wine club and golfing package (wow!) that will knock your socks off, provided that golf is your cup of tea; or, in this case, your glass of wine. :-)
Harmony Cellars is another famous local winery that features a wine club, which offers you a choice of 3 different wine plans starting at $50 for a 3-bottle shipment.
For a more varied choice, you may look into joining the wine club at the San Francisco Wine Trading Company. Their wine plans are called Tour of the World, Wine Cellars, and California Dreaming. This is a San Francisco wine of the month club, offering 2-bottle shipments, with prices ranging from $29 to $100.
Californian Born
From Livermore to Saratoga and from Castro Valley to Santa Cruz, the San Francisco wine club is a frequent occurrence.
While the bulk of these clubs exist as part of a local winery, there are also a few associated to stores and online wine merchants. In all this diversity, the one thing that remains constant is the ever so popular quality of the fabulous California wines from around the Bay.
Personally, I will always cherish the memories of having a glass of perfect local Chardonnay at the house of some very friendly and generous hosts, on a beautiful hillside, overlooking that wonderful wine country.
