The Wine Society Review

The Wine Society

The Wine Society...
Tradition and Innovation

Founded in London 1874, the Wine Society is the oldest wine club in the world. It is a co-operative business, which exists exclusively to provide its members with the best wines from everywhere in the world.

I was pleased to discover that their selection includes wine from some of my favorite, but not so well known, wine-producing countries. For instance, they have a choice of several award-winning Uruguayan Tannats, as well as some Greek, Hungarian and even Croatian wines, for those who care to try the original Zinfandel.

With about 1,500 different wines in stock, this wine club can definitely boast one of the world's largest selections. Moreover, both experts and members alike agree on the exceptional quality of most of their chosen wines.

The Wine Society's team is always traveling to find the latest discoveries wherever they may arise, and they have been known to be ahead of many in this respect, bringing the world's best wines to their members before anyone else around has found out about them.

Membership and Pricing
(Or How to Get Good Wine Without a Fuss)

Of course, there is a £40 fee if you want to join the Wine Society. Though this may seem steep, considering you won't receive any wine for that money, it gives you a lifetime membership, whether you buy wine regularly or not. They are sure to keep you busy with their numerous wine tastings and events.

In regards to the Wine Society's quarterly selections, you have a choice between the Wine without a fuss plans and the 4 different Vintage cellar plans.

With monthly subscription prices ranging between £25 and £180, the Vintage cellar plans grant you four 6-bottle cases four times a year. This is aimed at helping you build your own cellar of exclusive wines.

On the other hand, Wine without a fuss offers three different options (Everyday, Premium or Claret & French whites). Wine without a fuss subscribers receive a 12-bottle case, either bi-monthly or quarterly, with prices starting at £75 per case. Single bottles start at £4.50, and, given the quality and scope of their selection, the sky is the limit.

Pampering You as a Wine Society Member

Apart from all the Society's events all over the UK, membership gives you some other extra benefits, such as either free or discount-price storage for your vintage wines in their temperature-controlled cellars.

Delivery is free to anywhere in the UK, provided you order whole or half cases, or when you spend over £75. Their Cellar Showroom offers a program of informal tastings, as well as a number of special offers for members. There is also a similar showroom in Mentreuil-sur-mer, France.

Last but not least, you can only dine at the London dining club if you are a Wine Society member, though there is an extra subscription involved, after your first complimentary visit.

The Best, If You Can Afford It

Judging by both online customer reviews and the press, it appears that every Wine Society member is a happy member. In short, if you can handle the costs, you will enjoy your membership. After all, they are not in it for your money (profits are always re-invested), and they have been around long enough to know their turf.
