Rhode Island Wine Club Guide

Rhode Island Wine Clubs...
Itty Bitty Space, Great Big Wine

Rhode Island is by far the tiniest state in the union but you probably didn't know that it has the largest name. Its full name, which came from the merger of two areas when the state was formed, is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. So as you can see, the state has been known for its agriculture since its birth.

Rhode Island is perfect for growing the traditional old world wines most of us love.

In fact, King Charles II of England endorsed Rhode Island's first wineries in the 1600s because the microclimate was very similar to the best wine growing regions in France.

If you enjoy French varietals, like Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, or Riesling... you will love Rhode Island wine clubs.

Rhode Island Wines

There are seven commercial wineries within the state of Rhode Island... a pretty impressive number when you think about the fact that the entire state is only 37 miles wide.

The Sakonnet Wine Club is a Rhode Island wine club that is operated by Sakonnet Vineyards, the first modern commercial winery in the state. This Rhode Island wine club has some great deals for you, and it bottles all 100% handcrafted wines from its own estate. It imports nothing, so you can be sure you are getting the real flavor of Rhode Island.

There are two basic plans for you to choose from. The Standard Plan features four shipments of three bottles each. The Premium Plan is a little bigger, and offers you five three-bottle shipments. The prices reflect the quantity adjustment in the wine clubs.

The Sakonnet Wine Club has no membership fee, which is a bonus for you if you are just sampling some wine clubs or boutique bottles. You also get a 15% discount on any wine you buy from Sakonnet outside of the club, helpful if you are experimenting a little bit, but still want to save a buck or two.

Another way for you to sample some Rhode Island wines, or sample other wines if you are actually from Rhode Island, is to take a tour through the Savory Grape. The Savory Grape is a nice wine shop that also has a very well-rounded Rhode Island wine club for you to join.

The Savory Sipper, as the club is called, offers wines from all over the world (including Rhode Island), giving you a lot more options if you are interested in all sorts of wine. Through the Savory Sipper you may even be able to compare traditional French wines to those bottled in Rhode Island's similar climate! Fun.

All four of the Savory Sipper's plans offer you two bottles of wine each month. No matter which plan you join, you will receive other discounts, bottle notes, food recommendations and recipes.

The Savory Sipper plans range in price from $29 to $159, depending on the quality of wine included in the plan. The Explorer is the most reasonable, the Collector is the most expensive and the Enthusiast and Connoisseur plans fall in between.

Rhode Island Fun

No matter how you go about sampling Rhode Island wines, remember to have fun with it. Rhode Island does. For example, make your memories last with a specially labeled bottle from Diamond Hill and pick up some party favors while you are at it. The holidays are extra fun at Diamond Hill.

All in all, whether you are looking for wine from the whole wide world, or one tiny little state, you can find something to suit your palate and pocketbook in Rhode Island.
