A Massachusetts Wine Club... The Fruits of Martha's Vineyard
You'll find that the bulk of Massachusetts wine is produced in the southern half of the state, with a predominance of hybrid varietals such as Vidal and Seyval.
In spite of the cold weather conditions, the state has over 20 wineries and one viticultural area; Martha's Vineyard.
As both the demand for and the production of Massachusetts wine are rather small, most of the state's wine culture is concentrated in Boston, with its busy social and cultural life.
Boston Uncorked
Boston Uncorked is the Massachusetts wine club par excellence. Located in the Greater Boston area, the club is committed to becoming the "most exciting and avant-garde source for fun and educational insight about the world of wine."
Ambitious though the club's mission might seem, it has a very consistent philosophy. The general idea behind it being that you don't have to be a snob in order to know about wine and enjoy it. In their own metaphoric words: "we keep our glasses angled toward accessibility."
As you may have guessed, the club's activity is mainly social, and it includes tastings and events rather than wine selection shipments. If you are located in Boston, this seems like a great place to further your wine education and meet some locals who share your passion.
Time for the Divas
Another one of those genre-oriented wine clubs that women all over the country seem to be starting lately, Divas Uncorked is also a social type of wine club, with the emphasis on networking and events. They are known to hold gala benefits in support of charitable organizations.
For example, they hosted a wine dinner last summer, with the goal of promoting breast health awareness. If you are interested in mixing pleasure with a good cause, Divas Uncorked may be just your thing.
Personally, I particularly enjoyed their Wine 101 section, and I was surprised to learn about their Diva in Training scholarship program for women who wish to pursue wine-related studies.
Another one of the many surprising facts about the Divas: they have their own label of Chardonnay. All I can say is Bravo for the Divas! This wine club is run by girls who don't seem to waste their time.
As Scarce As Endangered Species...
Though the Massachusetts wine club appears to be as scarce as an endangered species, you still have a couple of options which will allow you to socialize with other Massachusetts wine lovers, enjoy a wine tasting or two, and improve your wine knowledge.
