California Wine Clubs

Exploring California Wine Clubs...
Wine Region Extraordinaire

Certainly one of the best known wine regions in the world, California boasts over 1,000 wineries which spread across its green prairies, mountains and valleys. Although the areas with the biggest wine production are Napa and Sonoma, there are great wineries all over this Western American state.

By joining one of the numerous wine clubs in California, you will get access to the best of the region's wines. Of course, nobody will give better advice about Californian wines than local experts and producers. These experts will usually go around the country selecting the best wines to include in their monthly offers.

California's Best

The reputedly lovely couple (Mr. and Mrs. Boring) that runs the most famous of them, The California Wine Club claims that they do not only focus on Napa Valley and the like, but they also seek out unknown wineries all over the state which might be producing the next local blockbuster (I mean wine, not movies...).

Besides their great selection of local wines, Californian wine clubs usually offer wine tours so charming they can compete with the sunflower-lined horizons of Tuscany and the Medieval villages of the wine regions of France.

If you are really interested in California specialties like Zinfandel, (though this one actually comes from Croatia, where it is called Plavac Mali) Pinot Noir, Cabernet or Merlot, then only the best California wine clubs will suit you.

Join the Club!

Besides the Borings' business, there are many other popular wine clubs in California, including...

  • the Gold Medal Wine Club with several membership options from "gold medal wines under $20" to "93+ points wines;"

  • the California Reds Wine Club with their luxury section "Ultimate reds", which features the best Napa Valley reds from the most traditional family-owned wineries;

  • the Original Wine of the Month Club was the first wine club offering door-to-door delivery of monthly wine selections. Being the oldest wine club in America, it is still running today;

  • the Celebrations Wine Club dedicated to both Californian and Italian wines;

  • The Wine Club operating out of Santa Ana, Santa Clara and San Francisco for the past 20 years;

  • the Southern Hemisphere Wine Center specializes in Southern Hemisphere wines, most notably from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile and Argentina; and

  • the Sunset Wine Club concentrates on enjoying good wine with the right food and good company.

Members Only

Several wine clubs in California usually hold special tasting events. Most of them will also accompany your orders with newsletters containing information about the wineries featured, gourmet recipe suggestions to accompany the wines of your choice, etc.

Other benefits may include special gifts and discounts, access to special wine celebrations, and free training sessions with experts who will unveil for you the secrets of Californian wines. :-)

Pricing and Delivery

California wine club memberships are typically free, while monthly or quarterly wine deliveries can be priced anywhere from $30 to $100+, depending on the quality and quantity of the wines on offer.

Some of the largest California wine clubs offer free local deliveries in their area and most of them have very affordable delivery rates nationwide. The majority of them won't deliver to Alaska, Puerto Rico or Hawaii, so it is always best to check before signing up.

In a nutshell, if you want the best of California, it is best to ask Californians to deliver it. Californians haven't been making wine for as long as Europeans, but, judging from the results, they have certainly perfected their craft.
