"Pour, Bacchus! the remembering wine;
Retrieve the loss of men and mine!"
Bacchus Wine Making Club... Mastering the Art of Gods
Much in the spirit of Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem Bacchus (quoted above), the Bacchus Wine Making Club vows to honor the once sacred task of making wine, by passing it on to simple mortals like you and I. :-)
The fact is that, with all the scientific and technological developments of our times, the act of making wine still retains some of its magical aura, perhaps because it is still the act of creating something that can "haste to cure the old despair", as Emerson put it, among many other (healthier) pleasures.
With this great reverence to wine making in mind, the Bacchus Wine Making Club is also determined to make the task easy for you, even if you have no experience in the field whatsoever.
As a member of Bacchus, you will get a chance to have a hands-on experience, with the aid of expert wine makers, whose job will be to reveal to you the secrets of this ancient human occupation.
Racking and Crushing
The Bacchus Wine Making Club's training program is broken down into four sessions, starting in September with the harvest of grapes from the California wine region. During the first session you will de-stem and crush grapes. Session two, which takes place one week later, will be the time for you to press your wine.
After that, it is time for sessions 3 and 4, where you will rack and remove sediment, to finally bottle your wine with your own customized labels.
Considering that the founder of this Bacchus school of wine has been named 7th Wine Maker Master in the US by the
American Wine Society,
your wine making experience at Bacchus promises to be fun, exhilarating, and crowned with your own label of excellent quality wine.
Pricing
The question you may now be asking yourself is: how much is this wonderful experience going to cost me?
The truth is that this is not a game; it is a real professional, though carefully guided, wine making experience. As such, it can be only done by the barrel or half barrel.
In other words, there is no individual charge. What you need to do is get together with a group of friends and family, in order to purchase grapes (the club has an impressive varietal selection), buy or rent a barrel, and cover the costs of bottling your resulting 250 bottles of wine (124 for a half barrel).
In order to produce 250 bottles, you will need to spend between $1,700 and $2,200 on grapes, depending on your choice of varietal, plus about $375 for bottling, corks, etc.
If you do the Math, you will find that you will have your own wine label for under $15 a bottle. This equation makes the Bacchus Wine Making Club ideal for any big family or sizable group of wine enthusiasts.
If I was in California, I would be hauling my brother and sister, parents, relatives, and what not, over there right now to book our barrel for next year.
Sharing the Wine
I say, if you are a passionate wine lover living in the California area, you should definitely go out there and check out what the Bacchus Wine Making Club has to offer.
My hopes are that you will not end up saying like Robert Herrick "Bacchus, let me drink no more! Wild are seas that want a shore!" My recipe for that: don't drink all 250 bottles yourself, share it around!
After all, what could be more rewarding than sharing great wine, made with your own hands, with the people you love?
