The American Wine Society... Providing Wine Knowledge for All
The American Wine Society is a non-profit organization which was founded in 1967. It is dedicated to learning, and educating you about all aspects of wine and wine-making. It proudly claims to be the "oldest consumer-based wine education organization" in the United States.
The most important event held by the Wine Society is their National Conference, which takes place each Fall.
As a member, you can get together with other members for two and a half days each November, to attend conferences and lectures, participate in wine tastings... and generally enjoy connoisseur and gourmet treatment at exclusive luncheons and dinners. :-)
Membership & Benefits
There are different kinds of memberships available, depending on who you are and what your main interest is.
If you are a wine-maker or business-related person you can choose a professional membership. This will ensure great exposure for you and your business, both online and on the Society's prestigious publication Wine Journal.
Annual dues are $62 for a regular membership and $85 for a professional one. As a member of the Society you will receive a subscription to Wine Journal, as well as access to special wine judge training sessions, which are held during their annual wine conferences. However, in order to participate in these educational programs you'll still need to pay a fee.
Other benefits you'll receive as a member include nationwide discounts at wineries and participation in wine events and tastings. There is also a student membership, if you are a student between 21 and 25 years of age, which costs only $25 and a senior citizens' lifetime membership for $800.
Extracurricular Activities
The Society also publishes the very informative American Wine Society News, as well as technical manuals and books on wine grape growing, winemaking and other related subjects.
The marked social aspect of this wine society is mostly developed by each local chapter, in the form of monthly meetings, wine tastings, picnics, wine tours, and other similar activities.
So your local chapter will keep you busy all year long with fun and exciting activities.
In line with its educational mission, the Society also offers a scholarship program for enology and wine-related studies.
All in all, a great option if you are a wine enthusiast or professional alike... the Wine Society creates great opportunities for you to acquire and share knowledge about winemaking, wine grape growing, and the history and appreciation of wine.
